WHAT
WE DO
Texans for Indigenous, Heritage & Sustainable Agriculture is a grassroots, youth-led, nonprofit organization that empowers our generation to lead the charge in transforming Texas agriculture into a greener, sustainable food supply through scientific research, public education, and advocacy.
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.
Did you know that Texas has one of the largest agricultural economies but also a high level of food insecurity? Did you know that climate change is impacting the heat, weather and growing seasons for our food supply and that water is becoming more and more precious as snow packs and river flows change?
At TIHSA we are addressing this situation by examining sustainable agriculture practices with a focus on traditional, indigenous and heritage practices. This is because earlier societies did not have the luxury of capital and engineering to help source their food. They had to gain a nutrient-rich diet by living close to the land, respecting it to provide sustenance. These practices are valuable to consider as we seek hardy methods of food production that will feed the most people reliably while conserving our precious natural resources.
TIHSA works to change this situation through the research, education and advocacy projects discussed below.
Legislative Watch
Social Media Influence
Sustainable Agriculture Tracker
TIHSA tracks legislation action that impacts sustainable agriculture and food insecurity, at the local, state, federal and international levels. This includes tracking FDA regulatory action and rule-making. In doing so, TIHSA engages in advocacy outreach to lawmakers and regulators to advance the Sustainable Food agenda. We partner with like-minded organizations to amplify our voices together.
TIHSA leverages the vast social media presence and know-how of the youth generation to get the word out about Sustainable Food. Today's teenagers communicate and amplify each other's voices through the power of social media, and TIHSA encourages youth to take action through their social media to promote traditional approaches to sustaining our food supply in these challenging times of climate change.
Keeping track of research and studying primary sources of knowledge in sustainable, indigenous and heritage agriculture practices is critical to understanding how we can promote a sustainable food supply. Sustainable agriculture studies is an interdisciplinary field involving not only agriculture science, but also the history and practices of native, heritage and traditional societies.
Sustainable Food Pledge
The Sustainable Food Pledge is simple, and you can make a difference by taking the Pledge now so that the food products you purchase will be sustainably sourced and environmentally harmonious for the planet because the seller has committed to supporting the “Sustainable Food Pledge"by identifying Sustainable Foods.
Hashtag Campaigns
TIHSA leverages the social media savvy of the teen generation through hashtag campaigns. We do this through advocacy for specific legislation, along with our #sustainablefoodpledge, #heritagefarmer and #growyourown campaigns.
Policy White Papers
As part of our advocacy efforts, we analyze policy issues and publish white papers. We use these as part of our legislative outreach to lawmakers and regulators, and we also make available them for education efforts to promote public awareness. This includes studies of the agriculture industry and the growth of the Sustainable Food movement.
